Types of Business Dress

When it comes to selecting the different pieces of your wardrobe you can look to your dress code for inspiration and guidance. There are three main types of business dress:

  1. Business professional
  2. Business casual
  3. Business formal

How to dress business professional

Business professional is the style we think of when we think of the outfits we see in banking, finance, government, or law. Women will want to look at two piece suits with a matching blazer and pants or skirt. Colour can be added with a blouse while suit pieces should be in neutral colours.

How to dress business casual

Business casual looks very similar to business professional in the style and cut but you can have more fun with colour or swap out the blazer for a cardigan. It’s still a form of business dress so you will want to ensure you’re wearing those classic business silhouettes. In a business casual wardrobe women can have more fun with prints and colours to show off their style and personality.

When it comes to denim in the workplace you will first want to check that it’s allowed, as some places will only allow jeans on Fridays. When buying denim for the office you want a dark wash without any rips and tears.

How to dress business formal

When women are building out a professional wardrobe it’s important to have at least one business formal combination. Business formal dress lands between black tie and business professional and is something you would expect for award celebrations or other special events.. Your colour palette for dresses or suit pieces should be dark neutrals such as black, navy or dark brown. While an evening dress can often be worn to a business formal event, it ‘s good to have a nice dark two-piece suit with a skirt in your wardrobe.
